Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve. The software was first released in 2003 and as of January 2012 and it now features 1504 games and 40 million active user accounts. It is estimated that Steam has roughly a 70% share of the digital distribution market for video games.

With this free app you can see which of your Steam friends are online, chat with your buddies, and shop for Mac and Windows games.

It does bring up an interesting question, though. Maybe Valve, maker of hits like Half-Life and Portal as well as the owners of Steam, is interested in making games for mobile platforms. It’s certainly possible. We’ve seen that great first-person shooters can be made for iOS thanks to Rage HD. This probably isn’t Steam’s beginning for the mobile space, but it could signal Valve’s.

The Optrix is often a POV camera that permits the user to complete playback, edit, and share videos directly from the web-site. The firm claims that they may be the only one that will do that, and they also claim that their new application can make the Optrix HD “the most potent POV device on the market”.

The Optrix from its official web page for about $89.99.

As a result of the Optrix, you can have the ability to shoot with the iPhone 4S’s full 1080p HD. Thanks to the new optics which will let additional light and video stabilization, your videos shall be much less shaky than most “extreme” videos. By the way, the case is water resistant so you are able to take some water, snow, or wherever you’re filming.

The Optrix HD features a protective touchscreen membrane, which can be only 0.5 mm thick and permits you to take control of the applications. The huge bonus is that you can really see what you’re filming, as opposed to other cameras where you see an indicator light and edit out the poor footage later.

The full 2012 Apple Supplier Responsibility report might be downloaded here in PDF format together with the Apple Suppliers 2011 list which is usually downloaded in PDF format here.

For the first time ever, Apple has disclosed a list of its key suppliers that produce well-known iOS gadgets like the iPad, the iPhone and iPod Touch. The major reveal, part of its 2012 “Supplier Responsibility” progress report released on Friday, is Apple’s response to criticism more than labor and environmental practices, in particular in China.

“Apple is committed to driving the highest standards for social responsibility all through our supply base,” the provider states. “We need that our suppliers give secure operating conditions, treat workers with dignity and respect, and use environmentally responsible manufacturing processes wherever Apple items are made. Our suppliers ought to live up to Apple?¡¥s Supplier Code of Conduct as a condition of performing small business with us.”

The document reveals that Apple conducted 229 audits all through its supply chain in 2011, up 80-percent from the 127 audits Apple conducted in 2010. Surprisingly, the document states that Apple in fact located labor, wellness and environmental violations. There had been even instances of underage labor.

“We found a total of 6 active and 13 historical situations of underage labor at five facilities,” the document states. “In each case, the facility had insufficient controls to verify age or detect false documentation. We found no instances of intentional hiring of underage labor.”

Apple adds that it necessary the suppliers to support the young workers’return to school and to strengthen their management systems “such as labor recruitment practices and age verification procedures to avoid recurrences.”

By far the most astonishing merchandise here in the International Consumer Electronics Show are frequently the ones you cannot get yet, like a approach referred to as WaterBlock from the company HzO. In a demonstration, an iPod with the WaterBlock remedy – not enclosed in any kind of case or covering – was dropped in a fish tank while playing, and it played on undisturbed for hours.

WaterBlock is a coating applied directly for the parts of electronic devices – the innards, not the case – that makes them impervious to water damage. So rather than attempting to guard electronics by keeping water out, it protects them by producing the water that gets in harmless. You would have to have an advanced degree to know fairly how it does what it does, but watching it at work is impressive.

To apply the coating, a gadget has to become dismantled, and any areas to stay untreated (like the screen and electrical contacts) need to be masked off. Then the parts are put in a vacuum chamber exactly where the coating is introduced as a vapor.

It would be prohibitively highly-priced to treat individual phones. So consumers cannot get their very own stuff WaterBlocked. But if it had been applied to electronic parts within the manufacturing approach prior to a phone was assembled, the expense would be “less than the price of a affordable pair of earbuds,” stated Rick Peterson, promoting director for HzO.

The product is still getting tested, Mr. Peterson stated. It has worked effectively at a depth of 1 meter, but the business has not yet identified a limit to how lengthy a device can remain submerged.

Amethyst X-1: To begin with, its design is superb; this docking station looks like something Ferrari would style if they were trying to create a spaceship.

the Amethyst X-1 is most likely to exceed your expectations. With its shiny surface and futuristic design, the Amethyst X-1 does not sound excellent, it looks seriously great as well?- and that’s not even what makes it stand out from the hordes of docking systems out there out there.

Asides from its shiny aesthetics, what really makes the Amethyst X-1 stand out are its controls. Despite the fact that this technique also comes using a standard remote control, it characteristics 1 with the most productive IR manage schemes we’ve ever observed for this type of device: hand gesture controls.

Unlike much of what Woot peddles, this Neo is new, not refurbished. when the Optoma Neo-i iPhone/iPod projector produced its debut, the price tag tag was a stiff $450.

The Neo-i combines an iPhone/iPod speaker dock with a 50-ANSI-lumens pico projector. To put that a further way, once you plunk your iThing onto the connector and load up your library of, say, “Arrested Development” episodes, the projector beams them onto any offered stretch of lightly colored wall.

It is not fairly a property theater-caliber expertise, however it is ridiculously cool. And if you have a Netflix subscription, you may project all that content material as well, not just the stuff you’ve purchased from iTunes or ripped from DVDs.

Sadly, other streaming apps, like HBO Go and Hulu Plus, are not compatible owing to annoying content restrictions. But you could always plug in a Roku box or related device, because the projector sports each HDMI and VGA inputs. Good.
